How to get into healthy snacking?

According to Harvard Health, paying closer attention to your snacking habits can help you control your weight and blood sugar — two key factors for a healthy heart.

If you’re trying to transform your overall health, you have to start with your diet.  Start by eating regular meals. If you stay hungry for longer, you are more likely to eat extra unhealthy snacks. The additional between-meal snacks can sabotage your efforts. There are simple strategies that can keep you on track, and help you keep your promises to yourself to be healthier and fitter this season.

Everyday Tips for healthier snacking

If you want to get into healthier snacking habits, here are some strategies that you can include in your daily routine.

Say no to junk food in the house. Clean out all your cupboards and do not buy any sugary or starchy, junk snacks full of empty calories. Without junk snacks, you won’t be tempted to eat it, especially in moments when you’re emotional, stressed or frustrated.

Make a New Plan that includes healthy snacks. Stock your pantry with healthy snacks such as fresh fruits, dried fruits, or nuts. Plan your daily snacks in advance, so you’ll be more likely to keep your snacking on track.

Listen to your gut. Before snacking, check with your body whether you’re really hungry or just thirsty. A good trick is to drink a glass of water and then wait 15 minutes. If you’re still hungry, have a healthy snack.

Cravings check. Sit for a moment and listen to your body. Are you hungry, or are you feeling lonely, angry, or stressed? Junk food won’t fix the problem. Instead, use some breathing techniques, do some calming yoga poses or exercise mindfulness to calm down or boost your mood. If you still crave food, choose a healthy snack.

Schedule meals. If you skip meals, you might compensate by consuming too many snacks that are not healthy and fill up your body with empty calories that are not nutritious.

Carry healthy snacks with you. Plan ahead and keep a healthy snack in your bag or car. Nuts and seeds are a good source of protein, which helps you to feel full throughout the day.

Treat yourself with respect. Don’t eat snacks straight from the package, you may eat more than a single serving. Instead, serve your favorite healthy snack in a bowl.

Eat mindfully. Mindful eating is extremely popular at the moment. Turn off the TV, put down your phone, and enjoy your snack. Your body is your temple.
